Detailed description of Falls Resort & Golf Club, CLOSED 2016

Falls Resort & Golf Club is a Resort, 18 hole golf course located in New Ulm, Texas.

Falls Resort Golf Course opened in 1984. Dave Marr and Jay Riviere designed the course. This is one of Jay Riviere's finest designs. In fact, the late Texas golf course architect had a house on the course.

The golf course winds through the beautiful solid cedar and pine forests with a series of lakes and cascading waterfalls.

Blue tees: par-72, 7,765 yards, 72.5 / 135

White tees: par-72, 6,188 yards, 70.9 / 127

Red tees: par-72, 5,348 yards, 70.0 / 123

The course closed in 2016. The course, located about 70 miles from Houston, had once been a day trip or overnight destination for Houston golfers. But with the proliferation of courses in Houston, fewer and fewer golfers felt the need to trek to New Ulm. By 2016 the course was no longer profitable to operate.

I guess I was just expecting more from all the hype. It was a nice course with a good layout. Nothing spectacular in my opinion and not worth the hour plus drive from Katy much less further into Houston.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Had a group of a dozen guys. We actually played 4 rounds in 3 days. This course is above average and should be considered by all. The layout is grand and fits with the description of New Ulm being the "Entry to the Hill Country". There are some very difficult holes (all but one of the par-3s require a forced carry). Choose the right tee-box and you will be fine and have fun. Lots of wildlife on the course. It seems to have recovered 90% from last years drought. The Falls is actually a resort with Villas and Condos. Pool was great and crystal clear, Restaurant was outstanding and had a good variety of meals. Priced very reasonably; I intend to go back often.

Would travel: 120-300 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area

Fairways were in good condition but desparately needed watering is some areas. Sand in the traps was different from hole to hole with some being playable and others looked like small gravel. Hopefully they are in the process of resanding.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area

This is one of the better courses between Houston and Austin or Houston and San Antonio. It is never crowded and is probably the course closest to Houston with the most elevation changes (many blind fairways and hidden greens) The Falls is tough enough for pros but an awesome experience for the novice (and open enough to find your balls)... the staff are typical "Texas Friendly" and very knowledgable. The have accommadations for tournaments large or small.

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
